President Trump’s on-off tariffs create deep uncertainty regarding the costs of imported goods.

The largest imports in the United States from many countries are oil and gas, electronics, automobiles and pharmaceuticals. But there is another way to see what Americans import. It seeks to measure the country’s clear contribution to the total US needs.

For example, China’s biggest exports to the US are electronics – by dollar value. However, the US also imports large quantities of electronic equipment from elsewhere. However, almost 100% of imported infant carriages come from China.

Meanwhile, Switzerland is responsible for almost all of America’s imported precious metal watches. Meanwhile, Ethiopia sends about 2% of imported knitted baby clothes to the US, but that’s a larger share than other items exported to the US.

The table below shows the items that the US relies mostly on from each of its 140 trading partners. (The US also took out items that are exported in large quantities such as oil.)

About the data

We analyzed data from the US International Trade Commission on goods imported for consumption in 2024. Product descriptions were labeled using product descriptions from the Economic Complexity Observatory, and these descriptions were lightly edited.

The first four digits of the code were used to group products in a harmonious tariff schedule that lists product categories.

We excluded goods that are widely produced in the United States and used export data to remove goods that export at least 25% of what the United States imports by value.

Includes only trading partners who export at least $50 million in goods to the US each year
