Cardano is undergoing major transformation as it adopts a more open and agile development model.
Blockchain founder Charles Hoskinson announced the shift on May 10th, signaling a new chapter on the evolution of the network.
Cardano opens an ecosystem to speed up innovation
According to Hoskinson, the new approach will allow external contributors to be actively involved in building ecosystems. It also introduces flexible workflows to speed up innovation while maintaining platform security principles.
Hoskinson admitted that Cardano’s early designs paid more attention than speed. Focusing on formal verification and long-term planning helped to build a safe foundation.
However, he acknowledged that this same approach slowed development and made it difficult for external teams to contribute.
“The team didn’t want a deadline, they focused on the purity of their practice and thought about it for decades and decades, which benefited greatly from an era of unsafe practices, but it also made Cardano’s difficult to grow and thrive,” Hoskinson said.
To address this, Cardano has introduced smaller, more adaptive teams, such as Aiken and Midguard.
These groups work alongside established teams such as formal verification units for input and output. This uses advanced tools to ensure the safety of your code. The idea is to combine speed and rigor to allow networks to meet evolving demands.
“In 2025, we have opened up augmented ecosystems with small agile teams like Aiken and Midgard, and maintain knowledge, experience and rigour in formal method groups using IOR and AGDA.
He further encouraged this new hybrid approach to promote innovation while maintaining the fundamental strength of Cardano.
Meanwhile, Hoskinson acknowledged that some community members may resist change and prefer the platform’s previous methods. Nevertheless, he believes this evolution is necessary for Cardano to reach its full potential.
“You sometimes miss the old days, but the new day is full of even greater opportunities and exciting new capabilities. That’s the nature of all the great products and projects,” the founder of Cardano concluded.
This transition has already affected Cardano’s internal structure.
Several contributors who are allegedly planning to delay the Leios upgrade to 2028 have been rejected. Hoskinson made it clear that such delays were no longer acceptable.
Engineering of Engineering’s Direction Direct of Input Output confirmed that the team is hiring new contractors. These recruits will come from within the Cardano ecosystem and help you advance your Leios upgrade.
“We are in the process of hiring new contractors through the Cardano Ecosystem, a vendor with existing networking expertise. Onboarding will one day be necessary, but this will be within acceptable times,” Watson said.
Meanwhile, Cardano’s strategic change reflects a broader trend across the blockchain industry, where rival blockchain networks like Ethereum are releasing upgrades faster to maintain momentum.
Cardano now positions himself to do the same thing without losing sight of the security-first mindset that has built a reputation.
