The Air India Flight 171’s engine was temporarily cut off seconds after takeoff, resulting in a preliminary report on Jet’s fatal June 12 crash.
India’s Air Accident Investigation Bureau said in its report that the aircraft had reached the required speed, but a few seconds later, the fuel switches on both engines “transitioned” from “run” to “cutoff” position.
On the cockpit audio recording, one of the pilots is heard asking the other person “Why did he cut off?”
The fuel switch returned to its “run” position after a few seconds, but the engine lost its thrust.
AAIB said at this stage of the investigation there was “no recommended action” for aircraft manufacturers whose engines power the planes, or GE Aerospace.
Air India Flight 171 crashed after taking off from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick Airport on June 12, India’s worst air disaster in nearly 30 years and the most deadly in the industry in 11 years.
The accident led to 241 people on board when the Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 crashed into a medical college near the airport, and 29 more people died on the ground.
The AAIB, along with the UK’s Aviation Accident Investigation Branch and the US National Transportation Safety Board, were crashed to investigate the collision. This was the first fatal accident involving Dreamliner.
