(Reuters) – nvidia has told Chinese customers that supply of H20 chips, the most powerful AI chip allowed to be sold to China under US export restrictions, information reported on Saturday.
Nvidia said this week it plans to resume sales of H20 chips to China, but said under policy changes the US should approve licenses for exporting chips.
The US government’s April ban on the sale of H20 chips forced NVIDIA to override customer orders and cancel manufacturing capabilities reserved at Chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC).
TSMC has shifted its production line for the H20 to produce other chips for other customers, and it could take nine months to produce new chips from scratch, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said at a media event in Beijing this week, according to a report.
The report said Nvidia is not planning to resume production without citing sources or providing details.
Nvidia declined to comment on the report. Reuters could not immediately review the report.
Huang recently commented that Nvidia would increase supply of H20 chips, suggesting that the license for Chinese orders would be approved quickly.
Nvidia has also announced that it is developing a new chip for Chinese clients called RTX Pro GPUs. This will comply with US export restrictions.
