Openai has launched a new initiative to help the country build artificial intelligence systems rooted in democratic values, according to a statement on May 7th.
The Openai for country’s initiative is part of the company’s broader Stargate project, and aims to cooperate with the government in creating an AI framework that supports transparency, accountability and the public interest.
According to the company, the program aims to serve as an alternative to the authoritarian approach that AI uses to concentrate control. Instead, Openai wants to help the government in creating a system that allows people to determine how they work for AI.
The AI company said:
“We want to support these countries and in the process we want to promote democratic AI, meaning the development, use and deployment of AI that protects and incorporates long-standing democratic principles.”
This means that countries have access to democratic AI tools that reflect longstanding ideals such as freedom of speech, fair competition, and public surveillance.
The Sam Altman-led company added that the vision involves ensuring that the benefits of AI are widely shared and not captured by several powerful actors. The company plans to start with 10 national projects before expanding its programme further.
Open for the country
Openai will work directly with partner countries to establish local data centers, create custom versions of ChatGPT, and develop a national AI strategy with state partners.
Data centers allow countries to maintain control of their data, build their own high-tech industry, and ensure that AI tools are compliant with local languages, customs and regulations.
Meanwhile, the customized ChatGPT version can enhance healthcare, education and public services by providing solutions tailored to local needs.
Additionally, Openai said it will continue to strengthen its safety and security systems, focusing on the AI model. This includes physical infrastructure and protocols to ensure that the tools remain reliable and align with democratic values.
Openai will also work with countries to launch a startup fund. These funds help local entrepreneurs build AI businesses, create jobs and support innovation while ensuring alignment with both public and private goals.
