As they tried to improve their disappointing results last season, Serie A. Side Juventus secured a deal to sign Canadian striker Jonathan David for the first summer signing.
Previously, Crabliel allowed him to suspend his contract at the age of 25 and could not prevent him from leaving as a free agent.
Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and West Ham all came to the top as they tried to sign David. According to a statement on the official website earlier this week, the Turin giant has signed him a five-year contract that will not expire until June 2030.
Why Juventus needed Jonathan David
On behalf of a considerable coup, the arrival of Canada International fills the serious void in Juve Squad. Dusan Vlahovic was the top scorer for the team in the previous term, managing only 10 league goals and adding five more in other tournaments.
It’s no surprise that Juve was outscored by more than six other teams in 2024/25 despite finishing fourth in the Serie A due to the lack of the cutting edge kind needed for strikers to compete at the highest level.
In the UEFA Champions League, 26 other teams have improved as Bianconeri managed just nine goals in eight league phaseouts. Things were so bad in Turin that Boss Tiago Motta at the time felt the need to publicly criticize his striker, as I explained in this previous column.
The need for a genuine offensive threat is clearly evident, with that ineffective step being a man who focused on 36 goals and 20 assists with just 67 senior caps for Canada.
The new Juventus striker recognizes his love for scoring
In fact, goals have been played everywhere David has gone, since appearing with Genk, who scored 30 league goals in Belgium’s 60 professional league appearances. The move of 27 million euros ($31.56 million) to the Lille in 2020 made him even more deadly, scoring 78 goals in his final three seasons in France.
“I love scoring as a player,” David admitted at his first press conference as a player for Juventus. “I love getting into the game and finding ways to combine and involve teammates. My biggest strength is just finding space and being in the right place.
“I’m very excited. Every stage of the road is always a challenge. So coming to Serie A is also a challenge to adapt to the league, adapt to your teammates and be as successful as possible.”
Meanwhile, his international manager has no doubts about the pedigree of the new Juve Man. “There are different kinds of strikers, but in terms of pure returns, David is (Earling) Haaland,” Jesse Marche told La Gazzetta Delo Sports.
Also, Marsch has spoken from experience after coaching Norway No. 9 while at the Red Bull System, and David clearly sees him as a deadly striker who can continue to achieve his goals at all levels.
That’s exactly what Juventus lacked, and now Jonathan David will continue to score at the same ratings he has all the time.
